Maverick Torque

Maverick Oilfield Services is a West Texas oilfield company providing casing, torque turn, and calibration services, with casing crews working the Midland and Odessa area. The company opened in 2008 under founder William Phillips, starting with a single set of casing tools and growing to cover the Permian Basin and the rest of the southern United States, from Midland-Odessa to Lufkin and San Augustine. It describes itself as a pioneer of third-party torque turn, and states that its tooling is American made and built from new steel.

Casing crews and casing running tools

Six dedicated casing crews handle drill string connections and full-service casing and tubing running. Crews rig up, operate and monitor:

• Rig tongs
• Hydraulic power units (GOM and Fluidpro units)
• Bail extensions
• Elevators
• Slips and spiders, including air slips

Supervisors are sent out on almost every job to oversee work on site. Between casing jobs, tongs, power units, elevators and slips are torn down, maintained, repaired, regreased and repainted before leaving the shop. Power tongs are Starr units, selected for US manufacture and next-day replacement parts.

Casing running tools screw directly into the top drive and cover make-up, breakout, rotation and fill. The lineup includes external CRTs plus 250 ton and 350 ton internal CRTs, and the company states it is the only owner of the newest ActiveSET CRTi with vCAM, which auto-engages under 1,000 ft-lb and needs no rotational torque to fire its dies. Patented Maverick Guide Nubbins protect casing threads through the run, fabricated from a single piece of steel with no welds.

Torque turn and monitoring

Conventional torque monitoring runs on the Comtech CT-3000 from Connection Technologies, a Windows based system that graphs a detailed record through torque verification, works with any manual tongs in the field, and uses an electronic dump valve for torque precision.

Wireless monitoring uses 3PS TTS-08 dual channel subs, in service since 2008, which track hookload across the casing string and add integrated turns monitoring, with 4-1/2 IF box up and pin down connections and crossovers to fit any top drive. Drilling monitoring covers alarm and shutdown notifications, event diagnostics and preventive maintenance scheduling.

Calibration

Maverick tests and calibrates Iron Roughnecks and top drives. Proprietary MavCal software charts Iron Roughneck calibration in real time and produces a detailed report, which customers can view and download from an online account. Iron roughnecks calibrated include NOV, Forum and Scoton units, and top drives include Tesco, Canrig, NOV, Cameron and Bentec.

Torque rings, shoes and bucking

Volant 9-5/8 inch Delta Torque Rings are sold and installed on a turnkey basis, adding a shoulder that prevents over-torquing on API connections and covering pipe from 2.38 to 9.63 inches, with other sizes on request. Reamer casing shoes for drilling are also sold and installed.

Portable bucking units make up and break out tubing, casing and drill pipe in API and premium threads, and the crew makes and breaks bottom hole assemblies, drill bits and sub assemblies and installs float shoes and float collars. The company states its portable unit is the only one able to handle pipe up to 20 inches.
