Sirius Instrumentation and Controls
Manufacturer of solar and AC chemical injection systems, metering and dosing pumps, Apollo solar power packs and remote pump monitoring for oil and gas operations.
Sirius Instrumentation and Controls designs and manufactures chemical injection systems, metering and dosing pumps, and solar power equipment for the oil and gas industry. The company was incorporated in April 2003 in Alberta, Canada, and states that its focus is products meeting changing environmental requirements in the petroleum industry while remaining economically viable, under the slogan Profitable Environmental Solutions.
The company says its chemical injection systems are designed to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions, reduce the risk of chemical spills, and lower disposal and maintenance costs while optimizing the amount of chemical injected. It describes its manufacturing group as working to a LEAN methodology. Citing a 2023 ESG analysis by a global strategy consulting firm, it credits its solar chemical injection pumps with eliminating 4.8 million metric tons of CO2 across its customer base as of January 2023.
Chemical injection systems and pumps
Product lines cover:
- Chemical injection systems, general purpose and hazardous rated
- Metering and dosing chemical pumps
- Advanced control systems for chemical pumps
- Remote monitoring and control for chemical pumps
- Multi-point chemical injection systems
- Feedback control for chemical pumps
- Solar packs and MPPT chargers for solar chemical injection
- Tanks for chemical injection systems
Named systems include the Fusion and Fusion2 pump controllers, STAR chemical injection systems, the InSight Smart Sight Glass for continuous flow measurement, the Stack Multipoint System, and Insight Connect for remote monitoring and control. The company describes remote monitoring as letting operators manage by exception, responding to alerts when issues are detected.
Redundancy for critical service
For installations where even a few hours of downtime is a problem, Sirius offers three levels of hardware redundancy built around the Fusion2 pump controller. Each level triggers alarms when anomalies are detected and keeps injecting on redundant hardware while staff travel to site.
| Redundancy level | Controllers | Pumps running |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | 1 | Both run, rpm increases to compensate |
| Level 2 | 1 | One at a time, standby starts on fault |
| Level 3 | 2 | One at a time, standby system starts on fault |
Levels 2 and 3 give each pump an independent InSight Smart Sight Glass to detect when efficiency falls out of specification. Critical service designs also draw on long life seal technology, dual seals, dual heads, feedback control, flow verification and alarms.
Apollo solar power packs
Apollo Solar Power Packs supply power at remote sites without ready grid access, or where zero emissions are wanted. Standard sizes run from 55 watts in increments to 1,500 watts, with larger units available up to 8,000 watts. The 55 W unit suits small loads such as an RTU, and packs can be ordered skid mounted, trailer mounted, with gen set or thermo-electric generator backup, and with AC or DC output voltages.
A custom prefabricated concrete base is offered as an option, which the company says removes the need for tethering, piles or on-site foundation preparation. Listed applications include:
- Remote and temporary power
- Zero emission well sites
- SCADA
- Valve control
- Sensor and monitoring applications
- Environmental monitoring
- Security systems
- Back up power
Uninterrupted power supply
The Sirius UPS provides short term power to grid powered AC chemical injection pumps and critical instrumentation during outages. It is supplied as a packaged assembly, is compatible with Fusion and STAR chemical injection systems, and can be added to an existing injection system without modification. Energy storage capacity is sized to power demand and the required duration of autonomous operation.
The unit is rated for operation from minus 40 to 158 degrees Fahrenheit, and carries remote communications and alarms. It can be paired with Insight Connect for remote monitoring and control.
