Thunderbird Services

Thunderbird Services, LLC supplies downhole tools and field services for completion, production, injection and workover operations. The company was founded in January 2012 in La Salle, Colorado and expanded into Brownfield, Texas in late 2019. Texas operations run from facilities in Brownfield, Odessa, Snyder and Victoria, alongside a Colorado yard in Ault. The company states that it serves the Permian Basin, Eagle Ford and DJ Basin.

Completion tools

The King Frac Plug is a compact, large-bore isolation tool built from cast iron, designed for high flowback rates with reduced pressure drop and less sand accumulation, and drillable through conventional milling. The DeadStop ESP Catcher mounts directly to the ESP pump at installation, which removes a separate wireline or tubing trip, and includes a shear joint so the tool can be retrieved with a standard on/off tool.

The Atlas Dissolvable Packer gives temporary pressure isolation during tubing, ESP and gas lift installations, using an integral pump-out plug and magnesium alloy construction that dissolves during normal production, so no retrieval, fishing or milling trip is needed. It can be set on wireline or hydraulically, and dissolution can be accelerated with chloride exposure. Hulk and Paladin ESP catchers and the Optima Seal Bore Production Packer are also carried, and a dissolvable frac plug is listed as coming soon.

Packers and tubing anchor catchers

Production packers and tubing anchor catchers cover zonal isolation and tubing string anchoring. Pressure ratings and setting methods vary by tool.

The AS1-X handles treating, testing and injection in pumping and flowing wells, sets with a J-slot quarter-turn, and carries a large internal bypass that limits swabbing on run-in and retrieval. A high-temperature version is rated to 10,000 PSI.

The X-Reset is a single-string, double-grip packer that can be set on wireline, then unset, repositioned and mechanically reset with the tubing string, and converts to a bridge plug with a kit. The FA-18 is a mechanically set, tubing retrievable double grip packer with quarter-turn set and release, convertible for wireline setting with a T-2 Stinger Assembly.

Service tools and accessories

• Crest Compression Packer, weight set for acidizing, fracturing and squeeze cementing
• WLTC Retrievable Bridge Plug, run on tubing or converted to run and set on wireline (the 4-1/2 inch size is 63 inches long)
• 32-A Tension Packer, tension set for squeeze cementing, casing testing and stimulation where insufficient weight is available for a compression packer

Vice president Jason Taylor has worked in the downhole tool industry since 1993, at Pride Downhole Tools, Whitaker Oil Tools, BJ Services and Globe Energy Services, and joined Thunderbird Services in 2020 to head Permian and South Texas completion systems. Lance Davis, a part owner, oversees the Rockies division and has been in the same industry since 1995.
