Thompson & Thompson Group, Inc. is a family owned company that manufactures, sells, repairs and refurbishes downhole fishing tools and drilling tools. Work runs from new tool manufacturing through carbide dressing, machining, threading and hardbanding, handled in its own carbide and machine shop. In 2024 the business rebranded its divisions around what each one does: Pesca Tools for manufacturing, Thompson Tubular for tubing and drill pipe repair, service and inspection, and W74 Services for manual machining and Kutrite carbide welding. Machining, threading and coating

Hardbanding is described as adding a wear resistant alloy to the tool joints of drill pipe and drill collars to extend drill string life. Routine preventative maintenance on drill pipe is also offered.

The company states it is licensed to repair Grant Prideco products, covering GPDS, UGPDS, XT and XTF rotary shouldered pipe joint connections, including the XT-39 and XTF-39 sizes. Tungsten carbide dressing

Family history

The family's work in tungsten carbide dates to 1959, when E.J. Thompson learned to apply it to drilling tools. He opened his own shop in 1964 and ran it until retiring in 1971, then came back at age 74 in 1976 to help his son Marcus establish a tungsten carbide business in Hobbs, New Mexico.

Michael, son of Marcus, joined as the third generation in 1994, and the company describes the two of them as having grown M.P. Thompson into one of the largest tungsten carbide providers in the oil and gas industry. Michael started Final Cut Machine in 2005 to add standard drilling tools and machine shop services, and that venture became Thompson & Thompson Group, Inc.
